Genesis Cymru Wales 2 is an all Wales project, funded by the European Social Fund and supported
by the Welsh Assembly Government and Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council.

£3.8million to Help Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Unemployed into Training and Work
£3.8million European Social Funding has been awarded to Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, as part of a £70m national initiative, which was launched on 2nd October.

The Genesis Cymru Wales Phase 2 Project aims to tackle many of the major barriers unemployed people face when wanting to learn new skills or return to work.

The project was originally set up as a stand alone project in Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council in 2002 and due to its outstanding success it was rolled out to all 22 Local Authorities in Wales by the Welsh Assembly Government in 2005 until 2008. This new funding will ensure that Phase 2 of the project can now be carried out until 2014.

The Genesis Cymru Wales project has helped over 15,000 people in Wales and 900 people in Rhondda Cynon Taf over the last three years, to increase their employment opportunities by addressing barriers such as childcare, transport, lack of relevant skills and qualifications and low self-esteem.

Phase 2 of the project is now set to help a further 2,000 people in Rhondda Cynon Taf to overcome a range of barriers that prevent them from entering training and ultimately employment. Through its comprehensive package of advice, one-to-one mentoring, support to enter training and childcare funding, the project aims to help people build an independent and prosperous future.

Carol Daniel MBE, Head of Early Years and Family Support Services at Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and founder of Genesis Cymru Wales, said that the project had come a long way since its inception in 2002.

She said: “I am thrilled that the project can be continued for a further six years with the aid of this funding. There are so many people needing the support available through Genesis and this funding will ensure we can continue to help many thousands realise their hopes and aspirations and simultaneously improve their economic well being”

The new scheme will focus on reaching Rhondda Cynon Taf’s hardest to reach individuals through its unique referral service meaning health visitors, social workers and other professionals will be able to inform and refer them to the scheme. Individuals will also be able to refer themselves to the service. The project is primarily aimed at the economically inactive and unemployed, and particularly those who are lone parents, or have a work-limiting health condition or disability.

Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Housing, Councillor Paul Cannon, said:

“The Genesis project has already seen outstanding successes and this new phase of the project will build on those achievements and help to tackle the problems of economic inactivity within the County Borough.”

Launching the project Deputy First Minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones and Education Minister, Jane Hutt, met some of the people who have already benefited from the project.

Speaking at the launch Jane Hutt said: “This new scheme will build on the success of the Genesis project, tackling the problems of economic inactivity and child poverty at a local level. As a government, we are committed to tackling child poverty and this new funding package will play a key role in creating a fairer Wales. Genesis has and will continue to make a real difference, bringing economic and social benefits across Wales.”
